Our small island in the center of the Mediterranean Sea has been an enclave coveted by many different cultures, which is why centuries ago surveillance points were needed to protect the coasts.
Even the churches are built on high points because they served as refuge in case of attack on the towns...
Today we guide you from North to South so that you can discover the 7 defense towers of Ibiza that you should visit.
It is the northernmost one on the island, it stands on a 45-meter cliff and in its day it had a natural harbor that is now the Port de Portinatx.
This defense tower dates specifically from 1763, it consists of 2 floors and the door was originally on the second floor (accessible with a staircase); Its function was solely to observe the sea in search of enemy ships.
To get there you have to follow the Camí de Sa Torre from the road that goes to S'Arenal Petit de Portinatx. Although it is passable by car, you will find the limit when you reach some hotels, but after a short walk you will be able to reach your destination.
Discover the rest of its peculiarities by visiting it!
The Torre d'en Valls guarded the Tagomago area, and is the one located furthest east of Ibiza.
Although it dates back to 1763, what can be seen today is areconstruction carried out in the 80s, since unfortunately its gunpowder reserve exploded and was completely destroyed.
In this case it was guarded by two keepers and equipped with two cannons (which would explain its gunpowder reserve).
It is easily accessible by car through a path between Canal d'en Martí and Cala Boix
It is also called Torre de Sant Miquel or Balansat, and is elevated 95 meters above the sea, on a spectacular cliff.
This gigantic construction consists of 3 floors and can be climbed to the roof, since due to its tourist interest it was set up like this: we are sure that the tower keepers would have appreciated not having to climb a rope every turn.
If you decide to visit it after a walk through Es Pas de S'Illa or Caló des Moltons, you can enjoy the views of s'Illa Murada and s'Illa des Pas.
You can also find it as Torre de Comte due to its location (between Cala Bassa and Cala Comte).
It was the main line of surveillance and defense of the port of San Antonio, and in charge of controlling the islets of des Bosc, s'Espartar and Sa cunillera. Due to its enormous volume, it was one of the most important of its kind.
This defense tower dates back to 1763 and although it was converted into a home (as in other cases) it still remains practically unchanged, although privately owned.
Still, you can visit it with a 20-minute walk or 2 kilometers from either of the two beaches between which it is located.
This name will surely sound familiar to you, or Torre del Pirata, or Cap des Jueu... Because it is one of the most visited on the island.
Its popularity is due to its magical location just in front of Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell, islets that it was in charge of guarding.
It was planned as an artillery tower, but it was never armed, so it was limited only to observation from the year of completion in 1756.
The visit to the interior is limited by certain times, although this information could vary over time. It is also one of those with the worst access, and for which there is no decided path.
This defense tower is located at the southern end of Platja d'en Bossa, and is one of the oldest on the island (16th century).
It was built to protect the personnel who worked in Las Salinas, so it is somewhat different from the others: it served as a shelter for between 150 and 200 people between its two floors.
It underwent modifications in the 18th century to adapt it to the new defensive systems of the island, and it was guarded until 1867.
As it is property of the Consell Insular it is restored and in perfect condition, and welcomes visitors during the summer months.
Located at the southern end of Ibiza, it was in charge of monitoring the waters between the two Pitiusas islands, hence its name: it is the entry and exit door for anyone who wants to go from the larger island to the smaller one.
In this case it had three cannons that could fire at enemy ships, in addition to serving as a surveillance tower and warning the population.
It is located between the beaches of Es Cavallet and Ses Salines, in the heart of the Ses Salines Natural Park, and it is advisable to equip yourself with comfortable footwear and avoid hot hours.
At Blue Ocean we hope you enjoy this part of our history that still stands proudly on our coasts.
The views from the sea towards the towers will also allow you to get an idea of the incredible height at which they are located.
If you dare, we will be happy to provide you with a rental boat tailored to your needs.
Happy adventure!
