Is Ibiza really empty?

This summer, one idea has been repeated in conversations, headlines and social media: “Ibiza is empty”. But when you look at the data calmly, the reality is more nuanced.

Ibiza is not empty. It remains one of the most desirable destinations in the Mediterranean, with high occupancy, elevated prices and plenty of movement during the peak season. What does seem to be happening is a change of rhythm: less pressure at certain moments, greater price sensitivity, more measured stays and a different perception of the island.

So, rather than talking about a dramatic fall in tourism, it may be more accurate to talk about an Ibiza that feels less overcrowded in certain areas and more selective in the way it is experienced.

What the data says

In July 2026, the Pityusic Islands recorded around 1.7 million hotel overnight stays, 2% fewer than in the same month the previous year. Overnight stays by international tourists also fell, while domestic tourism remained almost unchanged. This figure helps to put the situation into perspective. A 2% decrease does not make Ibiza an empty island. But it does suggest that the season is not growing at the same pace as in previous years.

At the same time, hotel prices have continued to rise. In July, the average daily hotel rate in the Pityusic Islands reached 282 euros, 13.9% more than in 2025. This suggests that there may be slightly less volume, but more pressure on price.

In addition, Ibiza Airport recorded more than 5.2 million passengers between January and July, with a year-on-year increase of 3.1%. In other words, many people are still arriving on the island, although the feeling in the streets, restaurants or on certain beaches may vary depending on the area and the week.

Why Ibiza may feel quieter

The perception of a quieter Ibiza can have several explanations.

Higher prices

When accommodation, restaurants, beach clubs and experiences become more expensive, part of the market adjusts its spending. Travellers may still come to the island, but go out for dinner less often, choose more specific plans or manage their budget more carefully.

Changes in the visitor profile

For years, Ibiza has attracted an increasingly diverse type of traveller: families, couples, premium groups, visitors interested in nature, gastronomy or private experiences. Not everyone gathers in the same places or experiences the island in the same way.

Less saturation in some areas

There have also been measures to regulate tourist pressure, such as limits on vehicle access. This may reduce the feeling of overcrowding at certain times, although it does not necessarily mean a general decline in the destination.

An opportunity to travel better

For those visiting Ibiza, a slightly less saturated island can actually be good news. Fewer crowds mean better walks, more enjoyable restaurants, more comfortable beaches and plans with more breathing space.

September, in particular, can be one of the most interesting months. The sea is still pleasant, the light is softer, the days still invite you outdoors and the island begins to recover a calmer rhythm after the intensity of August.

It is not about thinking that Ibiza has lost its appeal. Quite the opposite. It is about understanding that many travellers may no longer want to experience it in a rush, but through a more considered and meaningful journey.
